The Mural and AI

A COLLABORATION

AN INTERACTIVE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Blending Trompe L'Oeil Artistry, AI Technology, & Cultural Storytelling

Overview

Where the Crow Lights is a groundbreaking fusion of public art, generative AI, and historical storytelling. This collaboration between John Pugh, cultural nonprofit Art Now, Southern Oregon University, and the Indigenous tribes of Southern Oregon transforms the trompe l’oeil mural into an interactive narrative that brings the Indigenous stories and the evolution of the town of Ashland to life.

How It Works

You pick up the receiver of an antique red phone (or use your mobile device) —a kiosk to the past, present, and future on-site at the mural.

AI-powered voices of the mural’s characters tell their stories, offering insights into:

  • The Indigenous roots of the land as told through stories from members of the Shasta & Takelma Nations.
  • The artistic and theatrical history of Ashland.
  • The evolving historical and cultural landscape of Southern Oregon.

This immersive storytelling experience invites participants to ask questions and engage in meaningful conversations, guided by AI-generated characters who embody the region’s diverse narratives.

The Mural as a Living Story

This project transforms traditional public art into an interactive landmark, where history speaks and responds. By merging AI technology with world-class mural artistry, we:

  • Honor Indigenous narratives through authentic, community-driven storytelling.
  • Expand accessibility by allowing visitors to engage in dialogue with the mural itself.
  • Foster connection by weaving together the stories of past, present, and future.

Through this immersive approach, Where the Crow Lights becomes more than just a mural—it becomes an educational experience and a catalyst for cultural dialogue.

A New Standard for Public Art

This collaboration creates an interactive land acknowledgment that demonstrates:

  • Public art can be collaborative and participatory.
  • AI can amplify historical and cultural voices with care and authenticity.
  • Technology can deepen engagement with our collective past while inspiring the future.

Where the Crow Lights is a powerful example of how art can bridge cultures, connect communities, and spark ongoing dialogue about our shared histories and potential.
